Lignano Sabbiadoro Yesterday

Some history...

The first accommodation facilities in Lignano go back to the beginning of 1900 when the island was not yet accessible overland, but by the ocean via the lagoon of Marano. At that time, the island of Lignano was almost completely covered by a pine forest and just some single farmers lived along the coast of the lagoon. In 1903 the first modest bathing facilities and the first Hotel were built.

In 1926 the first road to link the city with Latisana was opened and in 1931 the first inhabitants settled down here. In the year 1935 the tourist office was founded and, for promotional reasons, “Sabbiadoro” was added at its name, obtaining today’s name Lignano Sabbiadoro.

Since the year 1959 Lignano is an autonomous community, while up to that year it was part of the community of Latisana.
